TOP RENTAL & LIGHTING TIPS

Renting can be stressful. Not only do you need to get the product, you also need to get it back. Here are some tips when renting.

1.

Decide you is ordering

There’s a chance your venue will do the job (or required it). If not, then you’ll work with the rental company directly. Many have showrooms, others will give you a catalog of options.

2.

Hire from experience

In an ideal world, the rental company and lighting designer you book will have worked at your venue before (so that they can offer suggestions).

3.

Learn lighting lingo

A few of the more popular terms include pin spot, a beam of light that shines directly onto an object; color wash, covers a large area; a gobo, a sort of light stencil.

4.

Figure out setup and takedown

You could either go “tailgate” or “custom” delivery. Tailgate is cheaper. You will be responsible for unloading the rental items and taking them back. Otherwise, with custom, the rental company will unload, set up, and take down. It costs more, but it means minimal work for you. Regardless of which you choose, you’ll need to have someone at the site for delivery and pickup.

5.

Address special requirements

It’s not glamorous but you should make sure you have all the essentials, especially if the wedding will bne outside or in a unique space. You might need a generator to provide enough electricty for music and lighting; extra bathrooms; a dance floor; flooring (for uneven ground); and heat lamps or air conditioners.
